The activities of Manufacturing Innovation Valley and the Cluster of Manufacturing Innovators, as well as successful projects of Lithuanian companies were presented at the EIT Manufacturing Summit 2021. This year’s event focused on the Future of Manufacturing Work. EIT Manufacturing was established in 2019 with the vision that global manufacturing will continue to be led by Europe. The initiative therefore brings together all industry players: large and small companies, startups, academic and research institutions.

Gintaras Vilda, CEO of Manufacturing Innovation Valley, presented the experience of Lithuanian industry in the context of EIT Manufacturing. He spoke about the projects successfully delivered by Lithuanian Engineering Industry and Technology Association LINPRA and VšĮ Intechcentras, the Interino LT initiative of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, and UAB BaltLed. In his speech, Mr Vilda pointed out that the Manufacturing Innovation Valley was another Lithuanian business initiative aimed at bringing together the most innovative manufacturers to combine their efforts towards the same goals, while enhancing the leadership of European industry.

Daiva Urbanavičienė, CEO of UAB Aerodiagnostika, a member of the Cluster of Manufacturing Innovators, also shared her insights at the event. She is an independent member of the EIT Manufacturing supervisory board. Ms. Urbanavičienė spoke about her company’s experience in the field of data analytics and the company’s development of an artificial intelligence-based data processing system with financial support from the European Union. „The use of the drones we have developed and manufactured has created the need for specialised systems to process the huge amounts of visual data we have received. The EU funding programmes have enabled us and our customer to create a unique technology that we continue to develop,” said Ms. Urbanavičienė.

In May, ManuFuture, the platform for the future of the European manufacturing industry, launched a project to evaluate various initiatives by European Union member states and other countries to encourage collaboration between science and business in the area of innovation, technology and industrial digitalization. The Manufacturing Innovation Valley shared 8th to 10th places with two other initiatives on the list of 27 initiatives presented!

Gintaras Vilda, CEO of the Manufacturing Innovation Valley, says: „We presented our project at an early stage of our activities, when the construction of the Manufacturing Innovation Valley building was yet to begin. It is therefore pleasing to know that our business plan and vision for the Valley are among the best initiatives. I believe other countries will find our experience very interesting and useful. I have been presenting our latest activities to representatives of different organisations in Brussels recently, and they speak highly of our emerging ecosystem of innovative manufacturing companies and the business model we have chosen. It was, of course, a bit disappointing that we fell merely two points short of the 7th place, as the top 7 initiatives would be presented to the European Commission and other organisations. But I am sure there are many great successies ahead for our ecosystem and its members.”

ManuFuture’s experts chose Arena 2036 from Germany, Bind 4.0 from Spain’s Basque region, and Copa from Israel as the best initiatives.

Half of the manufacturing laboratories to be set up in Manufacturing Innovation Valley for innovative manufacturers have already been reserved and will house UAB BaltLed, UAB Sprana, UAB Kemek Engineering, and UAB Opeksas operating under the 3D Bonum brand. There will also be a prototyping laboratory to be operated by UAB Pažangios inovacijos.

Manufacturing Innovation Valley is a unique project both in Lithuania and in the Baltics. The 5,000 m2 building to be opened on the Molėtai highway in Vilnius in May next year will house manufacturing laboratories to be set up in line with the European Union’s ManuFuture 2030 industrial strategy.

The optoelectronic laboratory will be operated by UAB BaltLed, one of the largest developers of LED lighting solutions in the Baltics. Through innovation and light research, the company has established itself as a developer of future LED systems, with its energy-saving and sustainable lighting solutions one step ahead of other companies in the sector.

UAB Sprana operates in the fields of applied molecular spectroscopy (UV-Vis-NIR-MIR) and computer vision. The company offers process analysis technology (PAT) solutions for the analysis and monitoring of industrial processes. Research, development and multidimensional calibration of new analytical instruments and solutions are an integral part of its business. This company will run an industrial analytics laboratory.

The automation laboratory will be operated by UAB KEMEK Engineering, one of the leaders in the Baltic, European and CIS countries in implementing customised and original mechatronics and robotics solutions in the fields of automation and manufacturing process management. KEMEK has been installing and servicing a wide range of world-class equipment for industrial companies for 30 years already.

The additive manufacturing laboratory will be operated by 3D Bonum, an official distributor of market-leading 3D printing and 3D scanning services and solutions in the Baltic States. The company provides both the necessary equipment and materials, as well as advice on the application and implementation of 3D technologies. Gintaras Vilda, CEO of the Manufacturing Innovation Valley, says: “We are pleased that more and more Lithuanian companies trust in our vision to create a centre for innovation in manufacturing. Some companies will operate manufacturing labs, others will operate through our Cluster of Manufacturing Innovators. We are building an ecosystem where innovative companies will be able to try, improve and test.
